RESUME—CERAMICS

I am lucky to have begun another endeavor—a second "career"—following my 35 years as an ESL teacher, teacher trainer, writer and founding director of the English Language Academy at DePaul University, Chicago. Since I was not starting my pottery training at a university MFA program, I attended any workshops that would fit my summer schedule while I was teaching and then after I retired, I tried to go to at least one 2-week workshop each year. These intensive workshops with some of the best potters working today have been my teachers. They are the following:

Conferences, Travel

Since joining the clay community, I have tried to contribute to it and learn from it in any way possible. Here are some of the wonderful experiences I have had on this journey:

September 2008: "V Utilitarian Clay Conference" held every four years at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Gatlinburg, TN.
July 2008: "The Language of Craft" Summer conference at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, ME.
March, 2008: Trip to Morocco with potters Gail Kendall, Liz Quackenbush and Autumn Cipala. AKAL Conference at Amizmiz. Travel to Marrakech, Safi, Fez to study pots.
January 2007: Offered the Jentel Critic Residency (two weeks The Archie Bray Foundation, four weeks the Jentel Residency, Banner, WY) but was unable to take advantage of this residency.
July 2006 – February 2009: The Studio Potter board member; Chairman of the Board of Directors, June 2007- February 2009. Coordinator of the auction for 2007 Benefit (4/14/07) at the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; coordinator of Studio Potter show and sale of its donated collection of work at the John Molloy Gallery, April 2009.
April 2005: The 3rd World Ceramic Biennale 2005, Korea, held in Yeoju, Suwon, Guwanji, Korea. Attended the international exhibitions and visited ten ceramic artists’ potteries throughout South Korea. Group host: potter Arthur Park.
September 2004: National Clay Symposium: "IV Utilitarian Clay Conference: Celebrate the Object" at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

United States Peace Corps trainer: Served as the technical trainer in English as a Second Language for the secondary school program in Kenya. Provided an intensive ESL teacher-training course for the 1987 and 1989 education Cycle Peach Corps trainees in Kenya. Topics included pedagogy, methods, techniques for the ESL teacher as well as extensive teacher observation, peer and practice teaching in harambe schools.
CHP International, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, March 1987. Peach corps training: Trained Haitian language trainers in classroom methods (techniques and principles), testing, culture-in-language, evaluation and material design for teaching Haitian Creole to Peace Corps volunteers.
